I
was born in Prince William hospital July 30th 1987. I have grown up
in Manassas all
my life and jumped from house to house with my family. Growing up with
alcoholic parents was not easy but my grandmother tried her best to give me the
upbringing my parents couldn’t seem to get a grasp on. In the fall of my
freshman year my mother decided she had had enough and decided to turn her life
around for the sake of her children. I graduated from Manassas Park
High School June 11th
2005 and since then have been searching for what I want to do with my life as
far as a career is concerned. Ie worked two retail jobs since getting out
of high school, still not sure what to do with my life. I found IEC thanks to a
really good friend of mine Pat who encouraged me to apply after she saw the job
announced. Since beginning to work here I have learned to respect the disabled
community a heck of a lot more, now that I see what kind of adversity is out
there. I look forward to moving along and maybe developing this into my career.
Who knows what the future holds for me?

Program Director
Roberta McEachern
rmceachern@ieccil.org

Roberta first came to IEC as a volunteer, while attending school to become a medical assistant. On the last day of her externship she was offered a part-time job at IEC as an office assistant. She quickly moved to full-time as she was promoted to the Community Action position. From that position she learned, from hands on experience, about advocacy, The American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Independent Living history. She then moved into the position of Service Facilitator where she was able to meet people face-to-face and worked hard to get the services they so badly needed. Currently, she holds both the position of the Community Action Specialist and an EDCD PAS Facilitator. Her time is split between visiting consumers to make sure they are receiving the proper amounts and kinds of care needed in their own homes and working with groups of people interested in making positive changes for people with disabilities in Virginia. Prior to working at CEC, Jane contributed her expertise to special education research projects at JWK International Corporation and at Nero & Associates, where, among other projects, she managed the White House Conference on Handicapped Individuals Follow-Up and contributed to early studies of mainstreaming that helped to shape the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975.
